Some Thoughts by Thomas Merton on 'The Nature of Man'

'Man's nature disposes him above all to seek peace in the contemplation and love of the highest Truth. It can be said that all men are born with an instinctive desire to know the Truth and an instinctive (though unrecognized) desire for the supreme happiness which is the vision of God in heaven.

Thomas Merton, The Ascent to Truth, p. 109

 Hiatus

June and I will be gone for a week. We may have computor connections - however, we will probably be distracted by our 16 month old granddaughter who beats the computor any day!

 Practical Atheists

I am noticing something interesting lately.

I meet people who profess faith in their Christian God. They regularly attend church , or so they say. They tell me they pray, read their Bibles, listen to Christian music.

But these same people who profess this faith in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit worry outloud about the election (The world will be destroyed if Hillary or Obama win), the economy (We are going to have food riots soon.), the middle east (The Islamic fundamentalists are out to destory our culture.), etc.

The same people say they trust God, have faith in God, will confess that God is sovereign and in charge.

If they have this confidence in God, why are do they worry so?

I think that while they profess this faith in God, they are really practical atheists.

What do you think?

UPDATE:

A fellow blogger asked a question about what it means to trust God. Here is my answer - in the form of a story.

I think faith is like resting on a mattress. The ancient saints (recorded in Hebrews 11) talked about pursuing a city - they didn't actually see the city - but they knew the builder of the city so they keep walking toward the promised city.

I look out each Sunday morning at our little congregation - I see all these African refugees - who walked each morning to the little shack in the refugee camp to see if their names were on the list for departure to a host country - for seven, eight years or more they walked - each day - one day they saw the names of their neighbors in the tent next to them on the list - and they said their sorrowful good byes never knowing if they would ever see each other again. Then one day their names were on the list, they completed their paper work - eventually they went to the airport - and they flew to Phoenix, AZ - a city they had never ever seen even in their dreams - they were greeted by strangers who took them to an apartment complex. Two days later they discovered that their old refugee camp neighbors where living two doors down from them! Then the husband succumbed to the fatal disease that was eating at this body - and died 5 months after arriving in this distant city. Now he left a young widow with two children to raise in a strange city - that distant city of his past visions. Before he died, he tried to find a church to love his wife and children. God brought us together - and now they worship with us each Sunday. She has a job as a certified caregiver. Last week after 16 months of working, she was invited into the boss's office to be told she would be making $9.00 an hour!

I think these refugees understand that ancient faith.
