"And so there are two dangers to be avoided. First, we must not take our conceptual knowledge of God for what it is not. Second, we must at least take it for what it is. It must neither be underestimated nor overestimated. Both these these excesses end in a practical atheism. If we attribute too much power to our 'clear ideas' of God, we will end up by making ourselves a god in our own image, out of these clear ideas. If we do not grant concepts any power to tell us the truth about God, we will cut off all possible contact between our minds and Him."
Thomas Merton, The Ascent to Truth, p. 96

This kind of reminds me: is the glass half empty or is it half full. All I know in my simplistic way of looking at things is that wherever I am, I can feel my Higher Power with me and that when I walk into church, it feels like I'm coming home. I can't ask for more than that in this life. I hope you are well!
I have been missing our visits. I checked your blog to no avail. Thank you for coming back in my universe.
Your simple faith is beautiful.
May God walk with you today - may even the small signs of his presence in your life today bring gratitude and peace

I think that is how I understand God, He is bigger than I can imagine, He is greater than I can describe, I don't try, I trust and work on understanding what he wants for me in the best Manual ever, His word.
I think you are right on with Merton here. His point is exactly yours - that for us to define God by our limited language and perspective is to do a disservice to his true nature.
thanks for commenting.

Have a good evening!
Not to many people want to put the words Love and Wrath in the same sentence with God these days. They are in the same sentence in the Bible.
I would encourage you to follow our spirit and take those walks and do some talking with God the Father.

Right on both counts, friend.
We need to work harder at discerning our true and false concepts of God. Merton spends a whole chapter in this book on Fasle Mysticism. It is important that our views of God are based on revelation (as in the Bible) and on reason.
Second, we need to learn to trust God more because our hearts and minds fail us. If we trust our own 'street smarts' we think we don't really need God. Learning to trust God is the key to spiritual growth. As we trust God we learn to give our wills to him - which leads to further revelation of God to us (Acts 5:32).
I am glad that Merton expressed your thoughts about God... I will add more quotes from Merton as time goes along

staying out of ditches is a good thing - as some one has said a ditch is a grave with the ends knocked out!
glad to encourage your faith
