Some Thoughts by Thomas Merton on "Contemplation"
Back to Full Blog

"But true contemplation is not produced by images or clear representations in the soul. It is the experience of an immediate spiritual union with God, a union which can only be effected by God and which is essentially a union of supernatural charity. Needless to say, no spirit other than God Himself can unit himself immediately to the soul, and no one but God can infuse supernatural charity into the soul. True contemplation is, then, the experience of a union that is so purely and perfectly supernatural that no created nature could possibility bring it about."

Thomas Merton, The Ascent to Truth, p. 79

Are there several levels of contemplation? When praying to God, He may answer immediately to impress upon your heart a quick action. I wonder about the Holy Spirit when it comes to personal contemplation.

When I want to talk to God and don't know the right words, the Holy spirit talks for me, so doesn't that work the other way also?

I guess I am lost or confused on this one. Not an easy thing for me to admit.

That was what I was thinking of today Ron. I love the fact that God desires us to be His children, that he longs for us to ask Him to be in our lives and that when His spirit comes, it brings a new light and a new love that is not like that which we find in this world. It is an unfaltering, forever loving light. My Mother in law and I were discussing the fact that dad is in heaven now and she misses him,, they were in love and married 60 years and the love they shared is soooo complete and to imagine not being married to him really bothers her. I said, mom, God's love is so great that one day we will understand and wonder why we even thought, How could it be, and it is perfect.
We know just a hint of that through His salvation and it is so incredible, I can't imagine the extent of it, I can only embrace it and rejoice in Him that it exists.

Cuddle,

You are correct - when we don't know the words to our feelings or thoughts even, the Spirit talks to the Father on our behalf. I don't think you are confused.

I think you are on a search for deeper reality and peace.

WOH,

I had a bit of a stressful day yesterday. there are parts of my job that are not always fun - one of them is trying to fit all my staff into my schedule for supervision - and so I had to double book a couple - and then people feel they get short shrift... can't keep everyone happy

but today is a new day - so peace reigns now

WP,

I think your mom and you are in a good place in your grief work. Your faith and hope sustain you in your sadness.

The presence of God's comforting spirit is not to be underestimated or undervalued - embrace Him as He embraces you.

You know Ron,
I can't imagine having to deal with the deaths I have dealt with without the hope of salvation.
