How do you build a friendship with someone at work, school or in the neighborhood?
Many of the same principles apply to developing a friendship with God.
First, we have to make ourselves available. If we fill our time with all kinds of activities, we are not going to have space in our schedule to make a new friend. Setting time aside for developing a friendship with God means just that - putting some time in our life for getting to know God.
Second, the new neighbor or co-woker may or may not be interested in your friendship; be assured that God is vey interested in spending time with you. The only question, then, is of our commitment to do work on a friendship.
Third, God is speaking to you and me all the time. Sometimes in the song of a bird, sometimes in the attention of a pet, sometimes in a painted sky, sometimes in the kind word of a human friend. God also speaks to us through his love letter. Just as building a human friendship is founded on good listening skills, so our divine friendship is built on developin an hear for God's still, small voice. These listening skills are not shaped in a day or two. Some people have found that hearing the voice of God takes years of attention.
Fourth, a friendship is a two-way relationship. God wants to hear your heart. You can talk to God in everyday language. You don't need to learn a special vocabularly. God prefers the honest expressions of our heart.

thank you for your support!

I liked what you wrote about "making ourselves available". I was reading something earlier today and it spoke of "having the key of willingness" to open the door, even just a crack and to have an open mind. They were merely suggestions to help people who are having trouble becoming comfortable with God. I thought it kind of went hand in hand with your post today. Thanks.....CM
"Willingness" keeps croping up more and more I notice in both psychological and spiritual literature. It appears that many people are agreeing on this point: You must make a determination of your 'will' if you are going to achieve the desired results.
Thank you for your contribution to this blog.
May your day be filled with blessings of joy and peace

Friendship evangelism is great. You meet people where they are. Most people won't come to a church with you but rather first you enter into a friendship and kinship with them ... hearing their difficulties and struggles and sharing their joys and griefs. What a lovely thing communication is and learning how God truly lives in another. He lives in us but we have to let Him.
Thank you for the

Thank you for your valuable contribution.

Right on! One of the best known and well-practiced ways to 'jump start' your conversation with God is to use a book like The Book of Common Prayer. There are many other books as well. Over the years I, and thousands like me, have used Oswald Chamber, My Utmost for His Highest, in the same way.

Chambers is meaty stuff -the book is organized into 365 readings - one of them is enough meet for the day!
When Eternity magazine was still in existence it asked all the major evangelical leaders to state which book besides the Bible touched their lives the most. My Utmost for His Highest was on each list - and for most #1. Rev. Richard Halverson, the Chaplain of the US Senate, at the time said he had read the book on a daily basis for over 30 years.
I have given away many copies over the years.

I wonder why people fear that communion, the intimate relationship and why they think it isn't biblical, he longs for us to be with Him.
Even though I was not ready to go further at that time, it felt okay and safe to me to say those words over and over as I sat quietly and meditated. It gave me alot of peace and strength. Later I began to heal and I became more willing to explore a spiritual life, I have often reflected back to those days and have to smile. I may not have had the connection I have today to God but he was always there waiting for me and in that sense it was a great comfort to me.
I really love my daily talks with him now.
Blessings!

I think that 'In the Garden' probably gets its inspiration from Genesis 3 where God comes walking in the Garden looking for Adam and Eve. I think the God is a bit 'shmaltzy' - it romanticizes the Christian faith for some people. The song does speak to a point as you noted, mainly, the personal relationship which we can have with our Creator.

I believe that the mantra you said during those dark days is exactly the kind of 'cry of the heart' that God loves to respond to...
Thank you for sharing your spiritual journey with me.

Isn't amazing how when our lives are aligned with the Creator how much more peaceful our lives are - personally and relationally.
